The summer institute was a five day event with the first three days recommended for teachers, aides, coordinators, and administrators and the final two days being recommended for teachers, coordinators and administrators. The conference covered a vast array of methods for teaching, data collection, determining function of behavior as well as assessment of learning and language behavior and daily living behavior. In addition a special focus wasl placed on language development and inclusion in regular education environments. In addition to cutting edge information in experimental education and empirically based curriculum of instruction each participant received resource materials to assist in assessment, data collection, and curriculum planning. The conference covered topics such as data collection, understanding, using, and measuring the strength of reinforcers, and many typical methods of instruction. In addition attendees received instruction in identifying the function of behavior, completing a descriptive analysis and understanding and using functional analysis to determine maintaining variables for behavior. Participants also received a thorough review of diagnosis and developmental norms. Trainers used hands-on participation as well as other media including video during the conference. The last two days were spent reviewing an in-depth behavior repertoire assessment of language and learning operants (CHLOE). This instruction was designed to assist attendees to complete the assessment and then use it to drive IEP goals as well as a tracking system for progress throughout the school year. Attendees also learned about the K-1 Inclusion Questionnaire Instrument (K1-IQ) which offers teachers and schools the opportunity to use a single instrument across all students to measure and place them using the same standard for least restrictive environment (LRE). The 2007 Summer Institute was so successful among participants that we were asked to expand the program of instruction and scope of the training for next year. This will be in development throughout the year and you can check on the progress of the 2008 Summer Institute as it progresses on-line.
